Should You Listen To A Cooking School's Enrollment Counselor?

By Shawn Cutler

If you visit a culinary school, you will often hear of the representative telling you how great their school is. They will often tell you that the average chef earns over $50,000 per year and many chefs earn over $100,000. However, is this true? It is true that many chefs earn well over $100,000 a year. However, in order to get to this level, you must be an experienced chef with a good understanding of food and serving. In order to learn how to serve food properly, a person must have an education in what they are doing. Most chefs today need to have culinary school education. School can teach you a lot about the culinary world and management.

Culinary school is beneficial for many aspiring chefs. If you have never worked in a professional kitchen, then it is often hard to compare it to an in house kitchen. Most in house chefs have never worked in a professional kitchen before. Culinary school gives you a nice exposure to the world beyond what we are used to. Culinary school will teach you about how to plan a party for 60 or more people. Let us say that you were going to do a wedding for 150 guests. Do you know how much chicken you should prepare for each guest? Howe much seasoning to use? How many guests want their food without salt? Do you have any other options besides chicken and fish? How about deserts? Can you tell your pastry chef to prepare a certain kind of cake?

There are many different aspects that go into a chef's job. Most chefs today say that they feel unprepared to take on large parties. They often wish that they went to a good cooking school in order to learn more. Most chefs that did not go to school say that they wish they would have. It actually helps to get different people's opinions. In culinary school, you get a vast array of experienced people talking about food. You may feel insecure and like you don't know as much. However, put your pride down and learn as much as you can. Once you get into the real world, ideas start to flow a lot easier.

If you are in a school that teaches you how to manage a kitchen and hire employees that will work well with you, then it's a good thing. Your education matters to your employer. They have to be able to trust you with thousands of dollars' worth of equipment. If you cannot get properly trained in leadership, then that is a problem. Many restaurants close down because there is not enough good leadership. You should know how to please your customers and beg them to want to know more about you. A lot of chefs today have spent a lot of money on their education.

The feeling of accomplishment also works well with school. Many students that have a culinary education say that they feel more secure when applying for a job. They have something to offer that many other cooks do not have. If you say that you graduated from an Ivy League cooking school, your interviewer will often be impressed. Certain schools mean success to an employer. It is important to feel comfortable with your cooking skills not matter what. Education is not for everyone, but those that choose it often do well.
