What You Should Know About Custom BBQ Pits

By Gary Mitchell

It is a great thing to be able to have a relaxing BBQ with family and close friends when the sun is out and it is nice and warm. Custom BBQ pits make it possible to have a BBQ area which is exactly what you want it to be. Creating one of these pits should be treated like doing a landscape project. These project can test the skills of even the more experienced home improvements people. Although it is a hard challenge to do it is something that is possible if you have the correct knowledge and equipment.

The tools which you will need to be able to correctly do the jobs will be gravel, a shovel, water, hand lamp, morter mix, grill top cinder braces, trowel, metal braces and bricks. All of these items are easy to obtain if you do not have them already as they can all be purchased from the local hardware store or home improvements store.

There is a lot of planning that will need to be done and the first task is to decide where the pit is going to be placed as you will want to out it where you will be able to maximise its use. Bear in mind the location of it in terms of the house as you will not the smoke from the BBQ going into the house as this will make everything smelly.

Another important aspect that you need to consider is what size you want and how much of the yard will the pit take up. It is best to avoid it taking up too much of the yard or you will not have space to relax and enjoy it. Take time to think about this aspect in a practical way as it will be hard to move or change the pit once you have made it.

Once you have done all of the planning work then the next thing that you need to do decide what shape you would actually like it to be. It is possible to have BBQ pits which are square or rectangular.

The shape that you decide will be mainly based on your preference and the space that is available for the pit. Once all of the planning work has been done then you are ready to start on preparing the area. The initial job that you will need to do is to dig out a space in the ground which is about eight inches in depth and about fifty meters across. This area will need to be cleared and the surface will need to be leveled off.

Once the area is prepared you will need to put the gravel in the area so that it is about two inches thick and then put a layer of mortar on top about two inches in from the sides all the way around. Using the trowel put a combination of water and mortar into the pit area.

Then smooth the area over whilst the mortar is still wet. Continue to this process till the pit has reached the height that you require at for using. Once you have built your pit and got everything set up you can then relax and make the most of your creation.
